Yearling Sales review 7 of 7

Well l must start the 7th and final sales review of 2017 with an apology, as it has been too many weeks since we published the last one. Travel and other commitments have made it very difficult to complete the review of this the Melbourne Autumn Sale. Sixty-nine lots made it onto the online catalogue by 29 different sires of mixed quality, on behalf of 40 consignors and 25 preparers. These yearlings have the opportunity to race in their own exclusive $50,000 race, which has the chance in time will grow into something very special.

Lot 586 Prepared by Courtney Slater and the team at Goodtime Lodge

While it can be very dangerous to single out individuals, Courtney Slater and the team at Goodtime Lodge needs to be mentioned here. The Goodtime yearlings were prepared as good as any yearling sold in Australia this year. Courtney, along with her husband Mark, have real commitment to help breeders.  Not only are they delivering exceptionally good looking youngsters as they walk into the ring, they also acknowledge and fully understand the real financial cost of producing yearlings in the correct manner. They are keen to grow this side of their business and are prepared to reward their clients by reducing the prepping fees dramatically to help vendors in this Melbourne Autumn sale going forward. Courtney believes it’s extremely important to have a 2nd APG Victorian sale and is willing to do her part to help the consignors who also have a passion for breeding in this country. “Well done l say”

Lot 640 Sold For $25,000

Benstud & Clients were the preparers/Owners of the sales topper, Lot 604 – a great looking Art Major colt out of a good Badlands Hanover mare that sold for $25,000. Benstud are one of the bigger players at the APG Yearling Sales and should also be really proud of the success they are getting.

Lot 639 Sold for $20,000

Kookabrook Grazing was the consignor on the beautiful filly above by Artistic Fella and at $20,000 she was the leading filly on the day. By the quality of the photo above, congratulations must go out to all parties connected with this well put together lot. I also must mention the vendors in both Victorian sales mostly did an outstanding job with the high level of photography they were able to capture. They are evidently leading the way in this area, and it’s a credit to them and to our sport.

Most people in Harness Racing would be familiar with the Toulmin name and it was impressive to see Alana taking the reins and responsibility to prepare Lot 617 in this year’s sale. While the Pet Rock filly didn’t reach the heights everyone expected, we do hope Alana will be back next year with more yearlings. It’s so good seeing young, decent , enthusiastic and fun people around the sales and I do believe this very talented lady as having a big part in Harness Racing going forward.

The APG Melbourne Autumn Sale had 9 yearlings that walked into the sales ring and sold without sending in their photos for the online guide. Without going over old ground, they got the same poor result as the vendors of previous sales that didn’t get around to doing their photos in professional manner. I don’t know what else APG can do to get this message through to its vendors. Put simply, they are giving money away by not making the effort to get this done. Let’s hope this time next year we are not having this discussion again.

Without getting into the politics of how HRV run the trotting side of the sale, l do think a major opportunity was missed the night before the sale with the only meeting held at Echuca with just two trotting races on the card. Imagine the possibilities if a closer working relationship was established between APG and the Trotting group. Contemplate the value in pooling some resources to work together and create a special weekend of racing, entertainment and fun.  This would most likely result in a well-run and promoted sales extravaganza for the betterment of buyers, sellers and the industry at large. One can only hope an honest review of the weekend will highlight the need for the above. Talk of an alternative sale for trotters is well under way and this would be a real shame for many people connected to the sport.

On the stallion front there was only three stallions (having had three or more progeny) sold on the day.  Sportswriter was the stand out sire of this group, and his top Lot 615 was stunning. Auckland Reactor’s connections should also be proud of his efforts. The Courtney Slater prepared filly (Lot 601) was not only eye catching, it was also the best of Shadyshark’s yearlings sold on the day at $8,000.

With a clearance rate of just 69% and a sales average of $8,465 this is not the greatest result; especially after l called the first Melbourne sale the best sales event in Australasia. Given the missed opportunity of HRV to put those major races on that weekend and the inability for the two organisations to pool some resources to work together to create a special weekend, lessons do need to be taken from this sales event. That said, the majority of people l spoke to were so appreciative of APG for establishing this 2nd sale, and they are of the opinion that with a few little tweaks here and there, this event will grow into something very significant in the years to come. I couldn’t agree more with this sentiment and l do think APG should be commended for stepping up the plate once again to provide a much needed serviced to our industry. It’s a B from me on this sale.

When I started the very first review l made this statement:

I’ve had several requests to review all yearling sales in Australia this year. While this may seem like a simple request, I can guarantee it’s certainly going to give me and harnessbred.com some serious grief.

Well as expected, a couple of people who l believe are in the sport for the wrong reasons did come forward with some savage attacks on me. Then, there was the group of people that didn’t share my take on things that gave me some really good feedback that l will most definitely utilise going forward.

On a personal note, l will not forget the very kind words (from a man that many people love and respect in our industry) who told me, we should be extremely proud of the contribution we are making to harness racing. That to me makes the long hours worthwhile.

These reviews look as if they have had a massive impact on at least one sale.  Unfortunately I’m unable to reveal true nature of this today, however in the next 3 weeks we will be able to disclose, what l would class as “One of the most astonishing announcements this state has seen in years”

Stay tuned and thanks for the support of this truly independent outlet that clearly still has dedication to keep “Driving the future of Harness racing”, and we more than welcome views and opinions even if they differ to our own.  Please feel free to email through any stories or opinion pieces you would like to share with our network.
