Peter Dobson, known colloquially as the deputy mayor of South Wyndham, got an early 60th birthday present at his local track on Thursday.
He is the breeder and owner of Jeremy Jones, winner of the Wyndham Workouts Committee Mobile Mile in 1:55.7 at the Young Quinn Raceway.
So, did the win come 16 days early?
“No way,” said Dobson.
“Every win is a good one.”
He knows because he’s had a few and although he can’t put a figure on it, he can remember the first.
It was Seattle Lord at Gore on Boxing Day 1986 and Dobson was also the winning trainer.
He remembers the second as well, a week later with the same horse.
“It was the day the all-weather track was opened at Omakau,” Dobson said.
Jeremy Jones is trained on the course by Gordon and Colin Lee and was driven to victory by Gordon.
Colin remembers breaking-in the son of Dali and described him as the perfect horse to have around.
Gordon was surprised by the time.
“When you are driving him in work you’d never think he could go 55,” Gordon said.
“It just shows what a real genuine horse he is; he gives you all he’s got.”
Gordon says the same of his owner.
“Peter has helped us out at the stables for years and he’ll even drive fast when needed.”
The win was the second for Jeremy Jones in nine starts, following his win as a three-year-old at Central Southland Raceway in May.
He is the first foal of the unraced Presidential Ball mare Sweet Shelby, who is the only one Dobson is breeding from now.
“She’s got a three-year-old by Raging Bull running along, a yearling by Shadow Play and a foal by Sportswriter.”
And the winning might not be over for him this week yet.
At Gore on Saturday, Dobson’s galloper Indiana Pearl contests the Gore Cup and is one of the favoured runners.
