The second of a two part article reviewing multiple winner and winner producing broodmare Belday and her associated family. A number won classic races, became the dams of classic winners/progeny and contributed to the genetic inheritance of numerous outstanding performers.

 

 

Belday’s dam Cee Day (1970 Rodney Day/Ceejay), thirty three starts, one win, three seconds, two thirds, $1,996, T2:19.4, bred by Keith Purdon (thirteen training successes – pacer Gay Tennessee eight; trotters Tough Girl two, Flameur three) and raced by Arthur (AJ) Bremner and David (DA) Peters (BF O’Carroll in ownership initially). Winning her one race aged six, her twenty second start at a Rangiora winter meeting when trained by George Cameron and driven by Ian Cameron. Following eleven unplaced starts at seven, she was retired to be bred from. She was the dam of nine foals, five to race for five winners including :

 

  • Game Command (Game Pride gelding); fourteen New Zealand wins, thirteen seconds, nine thirds, $73,750, T2:07.2; seventeen AUST wins, sixteen seconds, six thirds, $42,372, T2:05.8; overall Australasian record thirty one wins, twenty nine seconds, fifteen thirds, $116.122. He established a New Zealand three-year-old Colts and Geldings trotting record for 3200m stand at Addington on May 3 1982, T4:23.9/2:12.6. Winner of Dunedin Trotting Cup on two occasions, he was trained and driven throughout his New Zealand career by Ian Cameron. His fourteen New Zealand wins came at Addington (four, all New Brighton Trotting Club), Greymouth (two), Waterlea/Blenheim (one), Forbury Park (five) and Motukarara (two). He was a regular competitor at open class level without major success. His seventeen Australian wins were recorded at Penrith (three), Harold Park (four), Menangle (one) and country NSW tracks (nine). Raced at Moonee Valley Interdominions – third/fifth in heats, placing third to Game Ebony in Trotters Consolation. His regular Australian driver was KM Challice (occasionally JJ Beeby),

Belday’s unraced grand dam Ceejay (Askarben/Cautious Lady) was bred by Alan Holmes. Askarben sired open class trotters Waipounamu/Screws Loose, was dam sire of champion pacer Mount Eden, known to be extremely talented at trotting gait. Ceejay was the dam of ten foals, four to race for four winners :

Belday’s fourth dam Fire Water (Calumey Axworth/Resound) was the winner of eight races (Greymouth one, Alexandra Park five [two on same day], Addington one, Wanganui one) including Royal Oak and Sockburn Handicap Trots. At ten she finished third in 1947 Dominion Handicap, fourth in both Auckland Interdominion Trot Grand Final and Wellington Champion Trotters Handicap. Fire Water was the dam of :
