This is the fifth of an occasional series of articles reviewing multiple classic producing broodmares with five or more offspring in results information as shown on the Classic Families (CF) database. A number of these mares won classic races, became the dams of classic winners/progeny and contributed to the genetic inheritance of numerous outstanding performers.

 

PARK POOL (1933 Globepool/Polly Peanuts), Australian family of Dutch Girl (A35),

2:17.6; 11 foals, 10 winners. Breeder : JT Parkes, Cooma, NSW; Foals bred by VJ Rothacker, Serpentine, Victoria

 

Sire Globepool (1918 Globe Derby/Whirlpool), bay horse, 2:12.0 bred by Mrs M Dennis, Adelong, NSW. The winner of five NSW Flying (2 Epping, 3 Harold Park), Australian Trot Hcp (Victoria Park), Epping Hcp and two Australian Flying races at Victoria Park.  He stood at stud in both NSW and Victoria, died in 1940. The sire of 25 pacers and broodmare sire of eleven winners (one trotter Parksure; Gentleman John, Supreme Report, Main Pool, Olympic Pool, Amazing Pool, Sure Victor all from Park Pool – see below).

Gentleman John

 

  • Gentleman John (2:08.8, bay gelding 1948 by New Derby, from Globepool mare Park Pool, both by Globe Derby, so Gentleman John product of inbreeding (2×3 to Globe Derby). His owner/trainer/driver Eric Rothacker was given Gentleman John as a yearling by his father VJ Rothacker. The winner of a Hunter Cup, three VIC Globe Derby Championships, three Melbourne Showground FFA’s, Horsham Easter Cup FFA.

    His major victory came as a seven year old at the 1956 Sydney Interdominions where he won an opening night heat at 20/1 over 11¾ furlongs (2:09.6 mile rate) having led all the way gaining four points. Unplaced in the next two heats, off 12 yds in the final (24th win), driven by 27yo Eric Rothacker, Gentleman John defeated Mineral Spring by a head with Caduceus 1¼l away third over the 13½ furlong journey in 3:37.4/2:08.8. Eight of the ten finalists were descendants of Globe Derby – Springfield Globe represented by : Springfield Guy, Mineral Spring, Thelma Globe; Van Ayr : Active Ayr; One Step : Para Step; Lawn Derby : Andi, Set Point; New Derby : Gentleman John with only Caduceus (U Scott) and Blue Gamble (Gamble/Jack Potts) not being Globe Derby descendants. Apart from Blue Gamble winning two heats, all other heats/final were won by Globe Derby line horses
