This is the fourth of an occasional series of articles reviewing multiple classic producing broodmares with five or more offspring in results information as shown on the Classic Families (CF) database. A number of these mares won classic races, became the dams of classic winners/progeny and contributed to the genetic inheritance of numerous outstanding performers.

Sire Lulu Boy was reviewed in the second Australian Classic Winner Producing Mares article under his dam Greta. Briefly, the 2:17.4, bay horse 1907 by Huon Junior/Greta by Vancleve, bred in NSW, was a well performed racehorse winning Melbourne Thousand 1912. Following his retirement he stood at stud in NSW, Tasmania and Victoria dying in December 1935. He left 158 winners (1 trotter) including Belalie/Lulu Mick (WA Cup); Kernel Lu (ID heat); Lulu Ribbons/Mylandra (Fremantle Cup); Lulureen (VIC Derby); Wrinkle (ID heats (2)/2nd Final); best siring son Royal Lulu, grey stallion (2:12 at Junee show lowered Globe Derby’s record of 2:13) from only two seasons at stud and 100 mares left 24 winners including Royal Van (NSW Derby), grey stallion Royal Again (WA Cup from 24 yards behind, standing in NSW and later South Australia, sire of Eurolie Boy/Hailstorm [NSW Derby], Royals Hope [sire of Lews Hope, ID heat/second in final], Machine Again [sire of Blue Pennant ID heat/third Final, dam sire of Mineral Spring [VIC Derby, Hunter Cup, 2 ID heats/second final]); Royal Lulu was dam sire of Belgrave (NSW Derby), Chico (WA Cup), Active Ayr/Nevamaid/Para Derby (ID heat winners). Lulu Boy was dam sire of multiple Derby winners Admirer, Amorous (Hunter Cup), Acclaim (all from Lulu Love – see below).

Lulu Love’s dam Miss Kemp (Captivator, only sired three winners/thoroughbred mare; 2:19¼, winner of two NSW Australian TC Handicaps in 1920) was bred by JT Parkes, Cooma, NSW. She produced four offspring for three winners (all  geldings) –  Lulu Love (see below), Kempwood (2:24.2, NSW and Tasmanian winner, Launceston Show Cup) and My Chum (sold as foal at foot to Roy Roach together with Miss Kemp, 2:15.8, triple Derby winner – VIC/Goulburn/Parkes Derbies, Fremantle Cup) bred by Parkes and Grand Lulu (2:15.4, VIC Derby heat [beaten by Jean Pronto in run off], Ascot, Harold Park winner), bred by Roy Roach, Junee, NSW and sold as a yearling to Melbourne sportsman Bill Balloch. Miss Kemp’s (A14) descendants invariably flow from Lulu Love and her progeny as described below. Lulu Love was injured in a track accident and was sent to the broodmare paddock unraced.

He won nine races at three including SA/VIC/Snowtown/Warragul Derbies, SA Sires Produce, Goulburn Champion Stakes, NSW Derby (heat, Miss Lawnham won final in race record time when Admirer was 10/1 on). The sire of 74 winners standing in South Australia (Walkerville 1941-48 then Paskeville) and prolific dam sire of 77 winners including

  • Amorous (TT2:06.0, Melbourne Showgrounds, brown colt 1943 by Robert Derby). The winner at two of NSW Sapling (heat/final driven by Sutton McMillan) and Junee Juvenile before a lengthy spell was required due to soreness. In October 1946, he was sold to Mr C (Sid) Brown of Melbourne and sent to the stable of Albert (Darkie) Gath in Adelaide where he remained for the rest of his career
  1. At three, his ten wins included SA Derby (heat/final), Port Pirie Derby and Gawler Guineas, Easter Gift ((he had won his first eight starts) before heading to Sydney for the NSW Derby where he was beaten a head by Belgrave. At the conclusion of his three year old career, Amorous had recorded thirteen wins, twice second and unplaced on one occasion when racing against open class pacers
  2. At four, he opened his account with victories under lights at Melbourne Showgrounds (including the major race on programme of first night trotting meeting held at Showgrounds on 15 November 1947). He won a further six races in SA including Snowtown and Kapunda Cups. His record at the conclusion of his four year season read : 32 starts for 21 wins and five placings
  3. As a five year old, Amorous major successes came in Glenferrie FFA, Snowtown/Kapunda Cups and a sprint heat of 1949 Adelaide ID’s off 12 yards. In the remaining heats off 24 yards, Amorous finished fourth and third before placing third to Single Direct in the final
  4. The next season as a six year old, he won the Hunter Cup off 24 yards, while his ID success came in the Consolation after failing from 24 yards behind in the heats. His third Snowtown Cup also featured together with Strathalbyn Cup and several Melbourne/Wayville FFA’s
  5. At seven, he prevailed for his fourth successive victory in the Snowtown Cup with his final career victory on 14 April 1951 in the Allenby FFA at Wayville, Adelaide. Raced again at eight from long marks but realised no placings before being retired to stud.
  6. His career record of 85 starts yielded 41 wins (three at Harold Park, nine at Melbourne Showgrounds, 13 at Wayville), 22 placings and six fourths. He will be remembered for his battles with Silver Peak at Melbourne Showgrounds where they shared six race victories against each other at three all. Amorous was the sire of 32 winners, Laughing Rose (VIC Oaks), Moonstone Bay (2:02.8, ID heats [2], SA Labour Day Cup); dam sire of 56 winners and sire of grand dam of Vanderport (1:59.1, $285,770,NSW/AUS Derbies, Golden Nugget, ID heat)
  • Silver Spring (2:19.6, brown colt 1942 by Springfield Globe), sire of 25 winners, dam sire of 37 winners
  • Wrinkle Lu (2:15.2, brown colt 1935 by Wrinkle, first foal), SA New Years Gift. His sire Wrinkle (2:12.6, 2 miles stand on 550yd Wayville track [2:14.4]), mixed racing and stud duties. For Roy Roach, Victoria, racing both hoppled and free legged Wrinkle recorded nine wins ((7 Ascot, Geelong, Richmond – 10 furlongs to 2 miles) between 11 June 1932 – 7 January 1935 plus one Sydney win. Wal Messenger, SA purchased him for 300 pounds in January 1935, and until March 1940, he compiled 11 Wayville wins, 20 placings (handicapped up to 120 yards on Wayville, 80 yards at Snowtown). These included 1937 Interdominion heat wins over 1½ (2:11 4/5) and two miles (2:12 3/5 SA record defeating Lawn Derby). He actually beat the brilliant Lawn Derby home in all three heats. In the 1937 Adelaide Grand Final he was beaten a half head by Ben Coram’s Dan’s Son. He was considered the best staying pacer in Australia at the time as his wins from long marks often in class and track record times proved. Wrinkle sired 34 winners – champion Magician, Wrinkle Lu, Wrinkle Nut, Ben Wrinkle, Galleon, Onslaught, Eternal Thought (trotter), Wrinkles Image, Sweet Wrinkle (trotter). He was Involved in a fight with Findon Derby at Wal Messenger’s property, where septicaemia set in from a severe gash to his neck (died 13 February 1941 [12yo]
