AUSTRALIAN CLASSIC WINNER PRODUCING MARES

This is the thirteenth of an occasional series of articles reviewing multiple classic producing broodmares with five or more offspring in results information as shown on the Classic Families (CF) database. A number of these mares won classic races, became the dams of classic winners/progeny and contributed to the genetic inheritance of numerous outstanding performers.

 

CORREA (1986 Windshield Wiper/Emma Jo), Australian family of Beauty Royal (A16), 2:00.1, $20,310; 14 foals, 10 to race for 9 winners. Breeder : HJ Gange, VIC. Foals all bred by Farquharson Pty Ltd VIC (DR Gange Manager) except Crowea (RLRG Pty Ltd, VIC) and Correart (AJ Milne, VIC)

 

A son of the mighty Meadow Skipper, Correa’s sire Windshield Wiper (1973 Meadow Slipper/Keystone Mist by Bye Bye Byrd) was a top racehorse (1:53.2USTT, $379,205) who won North American Group One’s in the James Dancer Memorial and Messenger (third in Cane Pace). His 1:53.2TT meant he the retired fastest three year old of all time at that stage. His 45 starts yielded 12 wins, 15 seconds and eight thirds as a two and three year old. He commenced stud duties for Castleton Farms, Kentucky but after two seasons acquired for Australian duties by the Newbound brothers where he was an outstanding success especially when standing at Alabar Stud, Victoria. Windshield Wiper proved adept at leaving early comers as illustrated amongst his 413 Australian winners and 702 worldwide  – Amadora (VIC SS – 3f), Double Wipe (VIC SS – 3c/4h), Fragrance (VIC SS – 2f), Kyema Kid (QLD Pacing Championship, ID heat), Larrakeyah Lady (VIC SS – 4m), Mark Craig (VIC SS – 3c), Mazzini Magic (VIC SS/Tatlow Memorial – 2f, WA Golden Slipper, VIC SS – 3f), Misty Maiden (AUS Derby), Provocative (1:53.8TT, NSW Oaks, VIC SS – 4m), Surfing Safari (AUS Derby, VIC SS – 3c/4h), Tuff Choice (1:52.2US, $514,376, USA Governor Driscoll, sire of Merinai, Rowe Cup/Dominion Hcp), Willow Wiper (1:53.2, $606,395, Canadian Derby, USA Graduate Series), Windshield Denbi/Windshield Star (Tatlow Memorial – 2f), Winning Victory (VIC SS – 2c), Dee Dees Dream (VIC SS – 2c, TAS Derby). Leading sire on stakes basis in both 1988 and 1989 in Australia together with being leading Australian broodmare sire on multiple occasions.

Correa’s dam Emma Jo (2:04.9, $3,765) recorded two Cranbourne wins plus a non earning victory at Bairnsdale. Half sister to seven winners including Christian James (2:01.0, $62,952, WA York Cup) and Just Ribo (2:03.6, $36,199, TAS Diamond – 2). Emma Jo was dam of 14 foals, nine of whom were winners :

This is the family of Beauty Royal (NTT) bred by CJ McCarthy, Junee, NSW The dam of seven non winning foals. Beauty Royal’s dam left three foals, two winners Beauty Royal (NTT) and gelding Royal Domino 2:18.4. Family descendants include Fiery Land (SA Breeders Plate, SA Derby, ID heat), Fiery Ena (SA Oaks), Muloora (SA Derby), Special Dollar (SA/VIC Trotters Derby, SA Trotters Cup), Paleface Lyndy (TAS Derby. TAS Pacing Championship twice), English Beauty (VIC Oaks), Magnum Skipper (NSW SS – 3), Reba Rajah (ID heat, Kilmore/Maryborough/Mildura/TAS Easter Cups).

 

Correa a six race winner (2:00.1, $20,310), 5 VIC/1 NSW wins, owned by Ross and Heather Gange, Lemon Tree Stud, Shepparton who purchased her winning dam Emma Jo from Cranbourne trainer Paul Marrion, Correa being her second foal. Correa left five two minute horses among her nine race winners, three of them by Walton Hanover. Her first three dams left a total of 24 winners from 36 foals.
