This is the tenth of an occasional series of articles reviewing multiple classic producing broodmares with five or more offspring in results information as shown on the Classic Families (CF) database. A number of these mares won classic races, became the dams of classic winners/progeny and contributed to the genetic inheritance of numerous outstanding performers.

MAORI TRUMP (1981 Overtrick/Maori Miss), New Zealand family of Problem (N25), unraced; 19 foals, 15 raced for 11 winners. Breeder : R MCD Healy & Co, VIC; foals bred by Healy R MCD & Co, VIC (Maori Fella); Healy & Co Pty Ltd R MCD, VIC (Laurabell, Maori Trust, Maori Princess); JL & DK Fry, VIC (Maoris Tribute, Magic Maori, Maori Louise, Noppy Kiosk); Farquharson Pty Ltd, VIC (Maori Aphylla, Maori Acacia, Maori Australis, Maori Azolla, Happy Interest, Aussie Trump); Staffordshire Park, VIC (Hes A Ruler, Tennotrump, Hy Mountain Maori, Maori Cloud, unnamed Sundon filly)

Overtrick

Volomite sire line stallion Overtrick (Solicitor/Hal Dale mare) was syndicated by his Australian owners for $200,000 (forty $5,000 shares) when fifteen years of age. The best credentialed stallion imported into Australia in 1975, he won 34 races from 40 starts of which fourteen were classics (unplaced on six occasions), $407,483 including Little Brown Jug (2 heats/final), Messenger, second to Meadow Skipper in third leg of Triple Crown, Cane Pace. He held eight world records, paced fifteen sub two minute miles, fastest in 1:57.1, USA two and three year Pacer of Year and duelled on numerous occasions with Meadow Skipper. Remembered as a four year old for his epic match race battle with Cardigan Bay when setting a new fastest mile rate of 1:58.2 at Yonkers.

Standing throughout his career at Bill Wise’s NSW Carlton Stud, Picton, his opening season’s stud fee of $2,000 in 1975 was increased to $4,000 in 1976 this as a result of his high standing on the American sires list where he was twice leading sire of American two year olds (eventually sired 616 winners worldwide). His Group One Australasia progeny numbered only Adios Trick (GN Oaks), while his worldwide broodmare stats were much more impressive including No Nukes, Falcon Seelster, Sandy Bowl, Turn The Tide, Trenton and in Australasia Halyer, Kingstar, Our Sir Vancelot, as well as members of Maori Trump family. A number of Overtrick’s sons stood at stud in Australasia, the best of these being Mark Lobell, sire of ID Pacing champion Markovina, Via Vista, Egmont Ingana and as a broodmare sire he left Young Rufus, Megaera, Reba Lord, Rostriever Hanover, The Bru Czar. An interesting fact is that Overtrick stallions were leading UK sire for nine consecutive years (1986 Armbro Magic, 1987 – 1994 Ralph Lobell). He died of a severe scouring attack at Camden University, aged 23 (1992).
