The tenth in a series of articles reviewing the leading Australasian maternal families. Family numbers are as shown on the Classic Families (CF) database. Due to the extensive size of these families, only brief mention can be made of some of the more prominent family members and/or items likely to be of interest to Australasian readers.

N10 REGINA

REGINA (1885 Berlin/unknown thoroughbred mare), unraced, one foal, one winner. By Robert Wilkin’s imported stallion Berlin, Regina bred in Canterbury was purchased at auction by Winton sportsman James Duffy, an Irishman (Duffy died in 1927) who established Regina family. She is ancestress of a large successful Southland family which has also become well established in Australia.

 

Her only foal was Regina Belle, trained/driven by James Duffy, was a good class winner, NZMTC Presidents Hcp but also a shy breeder like her dam and other early family members. Regina Belle’s sire Bellman was an Australian bred trotter of imported parents who sired forty seven winners (thirty pacers, seventeen trotters), Bell Car (Easter Hcp), Bell Fashion (Timaru Cup). His broodmare credits included Logan Chief (see later). Bellman’s daughters included Rita Bell (family of Delightful Lady), Kola Bell (family of Sheza Mona) and trotter Bellflower (family of Stanley Rio).

Southern Chief, winner of inaugural Futurity Stakes that became the Timaru Nursery – 2 in 1936. Winner of twelve, five as six year old (Methven Cup, Oamaru Presidents Handicap, Canterbury Handicap); used as a sire.

 

Walter Moore

 

Walter Moore, half-brother of Southern Chief, good juvenile pacer. Won his division (two run) of 1940 Timaru Nursery – 2 at his first start establishing a NZ 2yo Pacers mile record of 2:10.8 (standing start) which stood for thirty years (2:07.0, Lumber 1970). Seven wins, four as three year old, Ashburton All Aged Stakes, NZ Futurity.

Southern Smile, eleven wins, one of the first 100 2:10 pacers in NZ (2:08.8 10furs 1936/7). She failed to produce any foals; her full sister Voloma (both by Adioo Guy), five wins Invercargill Cup, failing to breed on other than one foal, unraced due to injury (Naval Chief). Adioo Guy however left many fine breeding producers.
