The sudden death of Leo Newbound last weekend at age 84 harness racing lost one of the true pioneers of breeding in this country.

Leo Newbound was also responsible for travelling to America and negotiating the deal to get premier sire, Windshield Wiper, to stand at Forest Lodge stud, which he set up in late 50’s with his brother Kevin.

He also purchasedbroodmare Lucias First, the dam of Gay Acres, from Riverina breeder and trainer, Bernie Kelly.

Forest Lodge produced many champions including Rip Van Winkle and the top trotter Court Jester were two champions bred at Forest Lodge and Gay Acres and Victoria Oaks winner Provocative. Newbound is survived by his wife, Beryl, daughters Reagan and Suzanne, son Warren and four grandchildren.
